About · Sustainability

Made to be kept, not replaced.

Traceable timber, gentler finishes, very little waste and furniture designed to be repaired rather than thrown away.

The greenest kitchen is the one you never rip out.

Much mass-produced furniture is designed for a short life and a skip at the end of it. We take the opposite approach: honest construction, timeless proportions and finishes that can be refreshed.

A Hartwood piece can be adjusted, refinished and moved house with you. That longevity is the single biggest thing we can do for the planet, and everything else on this page builds on it.

Our commitments

What we promise, in practice

01

Certified timber only

Hardwoods and boards come from FSC® or PEFC certified sources, so every piece has a traceable origin.

02

Low-VOC finishes

Water-based paints, hardwax oils and lacquers that are kinder to your air and to our finishers.

03

Buy local where we can

Regional merchants first, and deliveries planned together to cut down on road miles.

04

Designed for repair

Traditional joints, replaceable hardware and refinishable surfaces turn wear and tear into a quick fix.

05

Efficient workshop

Optimised cutting lists, LED lighting and a wood-waste heater that warms the workshop through winter.

06

Honest packaging

Blankets and reusable crates instead of single-use wrap wherever possible.

Zero to landfill, as far as we can

Where every offcut ends up

Careful cutting plans keep waste low. What is left still finds a purpose.

Larger offcuts become drawer sides, shelves, chopping boards and small furniture.

Smaller pieces go free to local schools, makers and community workshops.

Clean shavings and sawdust become animal bedding and garden compost.

Anything else fuels our biomass heater rather than a landfill site.
